Title

Enhancing poultry feed through insect protein enrichment in Rwanda

Closing date: 15 Jan 2024

Poultry farming is a critical source of livelihood and sustenance across Africa, contributing significantly to food security, income generation, and nutrition. However, the sector faces persistent challenges, notably the availability and affordability of high-quality feed. Traditional feed sources, such as soybean meal and fishmeal, often come with supply limitations and escalating costs, compelling the exploration of alternative, sustainable, and economically viable protein sources for poultry feed. In recent years, there has been growing interest in utilizing insect-based proteins as a potential solution to address the shortcomings of conventional feed sources in African poultry farming. Insects offer a promising alternative due to their exceptional nutritional value, efficient conversion of organic waste into protein, and potential for large-scale, sustainable production.

This research project aims to formulate insect-based feed and implement controlled feeding trials to evaluate the impact of incorporating insect protein into poultry feed in Rwanda, within the broader context of improving poultry farming practices in Africa. Specifically, the project will assess the nutritional composition and quality of laying hens' feed enriched with insect protein; and evaluate the growth performance, feed conversion efficiency, and health indicators of laying hens fed with insect protein-enriched diets. In addition, the project will analyze the economic viability and cost-effectiveness of integrating insect protein in poultry diets. Through this research, we aim to contribute valuable insights into the feasibility and effectiveness of using insect protein as an essential component of laying hens’ feed within the broader context of African agricultural practices.

The scholarship is fully funded for 1 year, during which the student will conduct field work in Rwanda.
